I am a busy working mom myself and honestly, I still make these mistakes myself. There are some days that I just do not want to bother about skincare because there is so many other things that we need to care about; the house being clean, the dishes being cooked, the laundry getting done, the dishes getting washed, the clothes getting fold, the kid getting picked up from school and not watching iPad the whole day and so so many more. I can sometimes totally forget to wash my face and just not bother about it. However, when I read this quote above it was kind of like a wake up call for me. I have not been investing in my skin and my body as much as I would want to in years and as we age and metabolism starts to slow down it is imperative that our skin would not behave the way it did when we were 25.
Top 10 Biggest Skin Care mistakes (it could be not only for busy moms):
- Not Exfoliating Properly
- Skipping out sunscreen
- Using the daytime routine for nighttime
- Not removing makeup before going to bed
- Letting your skin become dehydrated
- Eating too much sugar (alcohol included)
- Forgetting to wash your makeup brushes
- Only moisturising at night
- Touching your face all the time
- Masking!
Lets go into details:
- Not Exfoliating properly is one of my top skin care mistakes for me as we are so busy everyday in and day out that sometimes the fastest we can do is just to clean our face with soap but without exfoliation the dead skin would not be removed from the skin and would end up clogging the pores and creating more problems. I do have a favourite device, fast and effective that can clean your pores in just 2 mins and can be done in the shower. More details in another blog post.
- Skipping out sunscreen. For me because I run around the island most of the day I CANNOT and must not skip sunscreen even for my arms. For some other moms you might think that you are staying at home all day or in the office all day that sunscreen is not needed. Think again because the light from anywhere can hurt the skin as well. Some mummies do put on sunscreen even when at home as well. I have to put
- We assume that we are simplifying our routine by using the day time creams for the night times but then our skin is more sophisticated than that. Night creams are usually heavier and meant for the night use because our skin needs rest. Day Creams are generally lighter and more targetted at specific areas.
- Sleeping with make up is a big No no in my opinion because make up blocks your skin’s natural ability to breathe and if you remove it late then the pores would be clogged.
- Our skin is the largest organ in the human body and our body is made out of majority water, if we can feel dehydrated our skin is too! Drink lots of water to help keep the skin hydrated
- Eating too much sugar dehydrates the skin as well, so does alcohol or caffeine. Reduce the amount of sugar intake and you would be able to see the difference in the skin elasticity.
- Makeup brushes need to be washed regularly. I know I am guilty of not washing my makeup brushes as frequently as they should be washed but not washing them accumulates a lot of bacteria and dust on them and we would be using those brushes again and again unknowingly putting the bacteria back into our face.
- Moisturising at night only. As mentioned, day and night creams are different but that doesn’t mean that we only moisturise at night. In the day, do not skip the moisturiser as the skin needs the protection as well.
- Touching our face all the time. In the case of now when COVID we are more aware as to not touch our faces or eyes consistently but if we do, the bacteria do get onto our face and into the pores.
- Masking is one of those rare luxuries that I get when my boy is busy playing his toys and I get 15mins to myself to mask but I cannot tell you how important this step is as masking hydrates the skin and gives it a more supple and smooth finish. Masking daily would be the best but I know I would not be able to do it, I try weekly masking.
I understand our busy schedule and as working moms we are always struggling for time but we also deserve to pamper ourselves and let our skin know that we are still caring for her. What I enjoy most is setting aside a schedule weekly for masking, and work out a fun activity where your child can help with washing the brushes. I try to also put out my creams on a daily basis so I do not forget to use them. Do not forget to track the expiry dates of the creams and the shelf life as well.
