AWAKEN THE GIANT WITHIN
by Tony Robbins – Chapter 4: Belief Systems
Reading the book by Tony Robbins and its a relatively thick book with tonnes of content. Just finished Chapter 4 on belief systems. This chapter is how somewhat I find very interesting on how different belief systems can create very different lives. He illustrates on several examples in the beginning of the chapter on how our different beliefs about life can lead us to either accept what life has to offer or strive for something better than ourselves.
2 brothers whose father is a drug abuser and alcoholic turns out to be 2 different people; one became just like his father and the other grew up and became a successful person with no ties to drug or alcohol. When asked what happened they both said the same thing “with this kind of father, how else would I grow up to be?”
“Most of our beliefs are generalizations about our past, based on our interpretations of painful and pleasurable experience (p.75), and “beliefs have the power to create and the power to destroy (p.75).
Tony Robbins
Tony Robbins describe our beliefs like tables, the table would be shaky if we have lesser legs to the table. The legs of the table are equal to the references that we give ourselves. We are not good enough, don’t have the right resources, or are born poor and so on. These are the ones that strengthen the table and therefore creating a belief. This belief is up to us whether we believe it or not.
What kind of belief are you holding or carrying? Beliefs can stamp from we are young to growing up. The beliefs become stronger because of the number of references that we give to those belief. If your belief that growing up you are poor and lack the resources to do well, you might start seeing in your life friends who are richer then you do better in life and making you feel that the belief that you are poor which leads you to not do well. But another person with the same starting belief seeks to change his belief by finding mentors to guide him and slowly building his own confidence will change his destiny totally.
It is important that we understand is our belief empowering us for the better or holding us back? Find someone or role models who are where you want to be and model after how they think and what they feel.
Activity
List down your empowering beliefs and your non-empowering beliefs and really look at them and one sentence I learnt that is so important is “What will this belief cost me emotionally if I still kept on thinking like this?” You have to change the meaning of this belief in order to break the references that you are giving this belief and therefore giving it less strength.
Applying it to myself
For me personally, I wrote one of my disempowering beliefs as “Thinking too much and procrastinate too long which leads to me not getting anything done”. I have had many ideas in the past to do a lot of things but nothing really happened. I was afraid of failure, afraid of how others would perceive me, afraid of success as well maybe.
I started my search for another source of income 6 years ago and until today I am still stuck, which was why when I started reading this book again I thought that I really needed to write those beliefs down and crush it. I do understand that even through blogging I might not be able to have a steady stream of income and some just give up trying. However, when I look at what would cost me emotionally, financially and my family/loved ones, there was no way that I wasn’t going to give it a shot, it is way better then doing nothing and just thinking.
